One of the multitude of exciting events to look forward to during our year as Greater Manchester Town of culture involves todays talent bang invited to record new versions of classic tracks by local music icons. An upcoming album and live performance , Rochdale Music Stories, I for one can’t wait for!
Our borough boasts a rich and diverse musical legacy: from Gracie Fields to The Courteeners, Lisa Stansfield to Autechre. It’s also the town where Joy Division recorded their seminal track Atmosphere, John Peel set up a recording studio, Franz Liszt played a concert and most importantly where ground-breaking music continues to thrive.
Rochdale Development Agency, in collaboration with The Stockport Music Story and Voltalab Sound Studios, are behind Rochdale Music Stories - celebrating the borough’s musical heritage through a studio-recorded compilation album and a one-off live performance.

Rochdale musicians are now being invited to take part. Working with Voltalab Sound Studios, each selected artist will rework a classic track from Cargo Studios or Suite 16’s archive, bringing their own sound and perspective to the process. It’s a paid opportunity and is open to all musical artists of all genres and organisers want the project to reflect the wide range of talent across the borough.
