TLC WITH THE TELEMAN BAROQUE ENSEMBLE

Review by Dr Joe Dawson

The Telemann Baroque Ensemble is an experienced troupe of talented instrumentalists. They have been appearing at Toad Lane Concerts for many years, latterly four times a year. They can always be relied upon for great musicmaking. The line up varies from time to time and today consisted of Alastair Roberts flute, Kevin O’Sullivan bassoon, Elaine da Costa & Sarah Snape violins.

John Goodstadt viola. Roger Bisby cello and Peter Collier harpsichord provided the fundamental basis throughout (called the basso continuo) giving it the authentic Baroque sound ideally suited to St Mary in the Baum. Peter also introduced the items with amusing anecdotes and interesting historical context.

Pergolesi’s Flute Concerto in G major is marked Spiritoso and indeed it was. Fasch’s Sonata in G minor featured an unusual combination with flute, violin, obbligato (meaning obliged to use) bassoon and cello, which worked remarkably well.

Telemann Concerto in A minor for Strings was beautifully balance and allowed the group of strings to have their day. The ensemble’s eponymous composer also wrote a wonderful double Concerto in F for Flute and Bassoon. This discovery, unusual for the time, consists of a fascinating conversation between the two woodwind players overseen by their peers. Wonderful.

The audience, including music students from Heywood’s Holy Family College really appreciated another treat of great music brought to life by enthusiastic players in a superb acoustic.

The Queen’s Award-winning Toad Lane Concerts are every Wednesday at 12.30pm at the Grade 1 listed St Mary in the Baum, Toad Lane, Rochdale, OL16 1DZ. Entrance fee is £6. Contact 01706 648872 for further information.

World Premier of HUSK written by Coronation Street's Rupert Hill at Hope Mill theatre

Preview by Steve Cooke

Actor Rupert Hill – perhaps best known for playing Jamie Baldwin in Coronation Street.- makes his play-writing debut with HUSK a dark twisting tale of violence, love, addiction and revenge delivered with a dose of black humour. Running from 25-29 September at Hope Mill Theatre, Husk is directed by Hope Mill Artistic Director Joseph Houston with Hill also leading the cast alongside Danielle Henry, Daniel Poyser, David Crellin and David McCreedy.

Ray has just been released from a long stretch behind bars. Homeless and penniless he pitches a tent in a forest intent on seeking revenge on the man responsible for putting him behind bars. Through a series of flashbacks spanning over 30 years, it becomes clearer what exactly happened to Ray to send him on this journey.

Beth and her husband Clark are spending the summer at her Dad’s house overlooking the sea near Blackpool.

Are they really being terrorised by a mysterious couple? Or is it a fabrication of the father’s increasing dementia?

Husk is a dark, twisting tale of violence, love, addiction and revenge delivered with a dose of black humour.
