Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel – the Exhibition

Review by Hilary Dawes

An exhibition currently running in Manchester and well worth a visit is “Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel”. The imposing Trafford Palazzo (part of the Trafford Centre) provides the ideal space for this one of a kind event, showcasing Michelangelo’s masterpieces which cover the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, whose grandeur would be impossible to view in such detail, even if visiting the chapel itself.

Each of the 34 frescoes has been brought to life in floor to ceiling format, using licensed high-definition photos, enabling the vibrant colours and detailed brush strokes to be viewed up close. Each image is accompanied by signage, outlining the artist’s interpretation of the subject and his possible reasons for its inclusion within the group.

Particularly breath-taking are the frescoes containing multiple figures, especially “The Deluge” depicting the Great Flood, and the stunning altar piece, created several years after completion of the ceiling, containing 390 highly detailed individual figures, portraying “The last Judgement”.

Having toured many cities of the world and now practically on our doorstep, this exhibition presents a unique opportunity to see something truly impressive. The event runs until 27th March and tickets are available via sistinechapelexhibit.com
